Let’s face it kids fall and scrapes and cuts are going to happen no matter how safe we try to keep our kids. In fact, getting a little banged up is probably a healthy sign of an active and fun childhood!

But having a kid who’s screaming because they just skinned their knee isn’t fun for you or your kid! And then there’s the part about cleaning their cuts and scrapes that adds even more “fun” to the mix.

Aside from the obvious fear of pain from the boo-boo cleaning process, there’s also something else we should be aware of… what we are using to clean those abrasions.

The Issue with Antibacterial Ointments

Most of us simply grab a tube of Neosporin or something similar but this may not be the best option and in some case can cause more problems.

The problem is actually three-fold. First off, Neosporin and Bacitracin can be an allergen and cause contact dermatitis for some. It’s been shown to cause an allergic reaction in 25% of users. That’s a lot!

Sometimes even a severe reaction. And in the case of an already painful scrape, it doesn’t seem worth it.

In addition, it’s petroleum based. Petroleum-based products are banned in countries all over the world due to their cancer-causing properties. So, further reason to simply look for an alternative.

And finally, there’s been extensive research on the dangerous overuse of antibacterial medications – both used topically or ingested.

So, what’s a mom supposed to use for her family’s skin issues?

Best Essential Oils for Cuts and Scrapes

That’s where using essential oils comes in. Essential oils are the pure distilled plant extracts that harness the most powerful healing properties of the plant in a concentrated oil.

These oils are powerful to heal the mind and body and also provide a natural healing balm without harmful and toxic additives.

I also personally find that using the combination of oils I’m about to share help with pain relief as well. Which is extremely helpful when treating kids!

Each of these recipes can be made as needed or made into jars, roller bottles, or sprays. But when a kid is screaming… you need something fast and ready so I strongly recommend making these in batches!

Boo-Boo Cream

  • 8 drops of Lavender
  • 8 drops of Frankincense
  • 2 tbsp of solid coconut oil

Simply combine ingredients and add into a 2 ounce glass container. Double or triple recipe as desired or depending on the size of your container.

No More Ouchie Antibacterial Spray

  • 10 drops of Lavender
  • 10 drops of Frankincense
  • 7 drops of Tea Tree

Fill up a 10 ml roller bottle with the essential oils first and top off with your carrier oil. I love to use sweet almond oil. Then top off with a sprayer top instead of a roller top.

I find that it’s more comforting for kids to spray something on their cuts without having to touch it with a roller top.

The tea tree is a powerful and totally natural antimicrobial so if you’re concerned that they may have scraped on something contaminated, this is a great alternative to Neosporin.

Treating your child's cuts and scrapes with Neosporin isn't the healthiest choice. These natural and safe essential oils will help soothe and heal your family's boo-boo's with ease! #kidsandparenting #natural #naturalremedies #essentialoils #nontoxic
